Part of an overall facility master plan completed by JLG in 2015, several upgrades and renovations are being completed within Mariucci and Ridder Arenas. The project will allow for removal and replacement of the ice and refrigeration systems in both 3M rink at Mariucci and Ridder. The rinks currently have separate refrigeration systems, so the code-mandated elimination of environmentally-unfriendly R-22 means that one new system can now supply refrigeration needs for both ice sheets.
In addition to these changes, Mariucci will see its Olympic sized ice sheet reduced in size, lowered, and additional spectator seating filled in along the sides. The new ammonia refrigeration system will dramatically reduce energy costs for both rinks, produce better quality ice, and be easier to run & maintain. An added level of safety will be included in the form of an ammonia “scrubber” that contains the chemical fumes in the event of an unwanted discharge.
